The William D. Ruckelshaus Personal Papers are comprised of three subseries: Correspondence File, 1970-1972, Daily Calendar, 1970-1973, and Speeches, 1970-1972. The Correspondence File, 1970-1972 subseries contains copies of Ruckelshaus' outgoing correspondence. Most is of a personal nature. The Daily Calendar, 1970-1973 subseries includes logs, correspondence, memorandums, notes, and invitations relating to Ruckelshaus' daily schedule. The Speeches, 1970-1972 subseries contains drafts and press releases of speeches given by Ruckelshaus in his official capacity as Administrator of the EPA. Speech topics include pollution control, air quality, water quality, conservation, and environmental regulation.

William Doyle Ruckelshaus was born July 24, 1932, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was Deputy Attorney General of Indiana from 1960 through 1965, and a member of the Indiana House of Representatives and its majority leader from 1967 to 1969. In 1969, President Richard M. Nixon appointed him Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Civil Division for the Department of Justice.
